Cambs Invitation Cup Quarter-Final Review

6:19 PM, Wednesday, 01 February 12.

The month of January has seen the Quarter-Finals of the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup sponsored by Ridgeons Ltd.

It all kicked off on the 10th January, where a 88th minute penalty from Daniel Cotton helped Ryman League Soham Town Rangers overcame Kershaw Premier Division Lakenheath by 3 goals to 2. Soham had taken the lead in the 5th minute through Denny Escorcio only to see Lakenheath equalise less than a minute later through Gavin Peacock. After 25 minutes Lakenheath took the lead through Luke Butcher and a shock was on the cards. Midway through the second half Soham equalised through Matthew Robinson before eventaully winning the match with the decisive penalty in the 88th minute.

The 25th January saw a further two ties take place and somewhat of a shock with Spartan South Midlands League Royston Town defeated a slighty understrength Southern League Premier Division Cambridge City on Penalties. Luke Robins had given Royston the lead with only 3 minutes of extra time remaining only for Olive Cox to equalise in the 3rd minute of stoppage time and take the tie to penalties. Royston Town eventually coming out winners 8-7 after all 22 players had taken a kick.

In the other tie that evening Ridgeons League Wisbech Town overcame fellow Ridgeons League side Haverhill Rovers by the single goal.  The decisive goal coming midway through the second half through Danny Emmington.

The final match in the Quarter-Finals took place on 31st January and once again this was also decided on penalties. Mildenhall Town had taken the lead midway through the first half through Wayne Proctor before Ben Lawrence equalised for Ely City with 20 minutes remaining. Ely eventually coming through 5-4 in the penalty shootout.

The Semi-Final draw will see Soham Town Rangers manager Andy Furnell return to his former club Wisbech Town while Ely City will entertain Royston Town.
