The group traveled back to 2006, a time when most of the participants would have still been in primary school, the reason? To see the classic cup final between Liverpool and West Ham United. What better match to report on with all the tension, goals and drama that we all hope for on cup final day.
Paul, who had been a member of the crowd on the day, provided some background information to the match and tips on taking notes. The aspiring reporters keenly recorded the action as they saw West Ham take the lead twice; only for the inevitable Gerrard wonder strike to level the match in the final seconds of the 90 minutes. Following a goalless extra time the drama concluded with penalties.
A few words of advice on structuring the article and the reporters 35 minute deadline loomed. The makeshift newsroom was industrious. Time up and a selection of reports were delivered to the audience revealing some expressive version of events.
Having had a taste of report writing the participants departed having gained a valuable introduction into the requirements of a sports news journalist and the skills required for a writing career.
